We’re In The Middle Of A Terrible Blubble!

If you’re an early stage venture capitalist or angel investor there is no time like the present to declare a bubble, say valuations are out of control and predict the demise of the tech industry in the very near future. Since they’re in the business of buying low and selling high, any angle that suggests that the buy price should be even lower sounds great to them.

If there’s any evidence of said bubble all the press will eat it up. Mostly because they were out buying Internet stocks in 2000 instead of doing their jobs and reporting on the fairly obvious signals that the Nasdaq was about to implode. They won’t get caught with their pants down and their hand out again. Declare a bubble early and declare it often. [Read more...]

Chrome OS App Launcher In Chromium

Google’s upcoming Chrome Operating System is designed to put the net back into netbooks. It’s basically an operating system built around a web browser. While it will have some offline capabilities that will allow you to do things like watch cached videos and read cached web sites while you’re not near an internet connection, the browser will be the main application. If you want to run an office suite to create and edit documents, Google will suggest Google Docs or other web-based office suites such as Zoho. Want to listen to music? How about Pandora or Lala?

But just because there are no native desktop apps doesn’t mean there won’t be an app launcher. The latest pre-release builds of Google Chrome, compiled by Hexxeh, includes an app launcher that you can open up with the click of a button to launch web apps.

Don’t feel like installing a pre-release copy of Chrome OS just to check it out? No problem. The desktop Chrome browser for Windows packs many of the exact same features that you’ll find in the Chrome-based operating system. And Download Squad’s Lee Mathews notes that you can add a command line switch to Chrome for Windows to add a program launcher. Changing this switch will replace the new tab page with the app launcher.

If you’re worried that this means you won’t be able to load bookmarks, don’t worry. You can still just type into the Omnibox at the top of the app launcher to search your bookmarks or page history. Or you can enter a new URL in the box to open a web site.

Google and chinese gov talk

Google’s Chinese search engine was defying local law on Tuesday by returning links involving the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and the Xinjiang independence movement, according to a report from NBC News.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the company tells NBC that despite its January 12 announcement that it has decided to “no longer” censor search results in China, it is continuing to do so. “”We have not changed our operations,” the web giant said.

Nonetheless, NBC was able to access previously-censored links from Google.cn, including the famous 1989 image of a lone man blocking a line of Chinese tanks in Tiananmen Square. A search for “tank man” in Chinese characters on the search engine returned just one link to the photo – though several are available from the company’s engine overseas.

Meanwhile, searching for “Tiananmen Square massacre”, “Xinjiang independence” and “Tibet Information Network” turned up long lists of previously censored results.

NBC did say, however, that search results were erratic and that in some cases, access to verboten sites was indeed denied. One can only assume that Google.cn was experiencing some sort of wonderfully convenient technical difficulties. Or that someone was having some fun.

In mid-January, in response to an alleged Chinese hack on its internal systems, Google said it would enter talks with the Chinese government to determine “the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all”. But talks continue to drag on – apparently – and Google CEO Eric Schmidt says the company has “no timetable” for their completion.

Google to buy DocVerse introduce Microsoft Office doc collaboration

The war between Microsoft and Google for your web-based document business just got a lot more serious.

Google has been positioning Google Apps as an Office killer and encouraging companies to adopt it. Meanwhile, Microsoft countered with a web-based component to Office 2010. The latest move comes from Google, though, with the acquisition of DocVerse.

DocVerse is a service that allows users to collaborate on Microsoft Office documents. With DocVerse in its portfolio, Google will be able to let Google Apps users work online with their existing Office docs.

In other words, Google is creating one less reason why anyone will need Microsoft Office in 2010. How DocVerse will be integrated into Google’s existing products remains to be seen, but this move will certainly make the battle for office app supremacy more interesting.

Your move, Microsoft!
