PRESS RELEASE: 37SIGNALS VALUATION TOPS $100 BILLION AFTER BOLD VC INVESTMENT

CHICAGO—September 24, 2009—37signals is now a $100 billion dollar company, according to a group of investors who have agreed to purchase 0.000000001% of the company in exchange for $1.

Founder Jason Fried informed his employees about the new deal at a recent company-wide meeting. The financing round was led by Yardstick Capital and Institutionalized Venture Partners.

In order to increase the value of the company, 37signals has decided to stop generating revenues. “When it comes to valuation, making money is a real obstacle. Our profitability has been a real drag on our valuation,” said Mr. Fried. “Once you have profits, it’s impossible to just make stuff up. That’s why we’re switching to a ‘freeconomics’ model. We’ll give away everything for free and let the market speculate about how much money we could make if we wanted to make money. That way, the sky’s the limit!”

Proof that 37signals is now a $100 billion dollar company.

A $100 billion value for 37signals is “not outlandish,” says Aanandamayee Bhatnagar, a finance professor and valuation guru at Grenada State’s Schnook School of Business. Bhatnagar points to a leaked, confidential corporate strategy plan that projects 37signals will attract twelve billion users by the end of 2013.

How will the company overcome the fact that there are only 6.8 billion people alive today? “Why limit users to people?” said Bhatnagar.

In order to determine the valuation of companies, Bhatnagar typically applies the following formula: [(Twitter followers x Facebook fans) + (# of employees x 1000)] x (RSS subscribers + daily page views) + (monthly burn rate x Google’s stock price)2 and then doubles if it they use Ruby on Rails or if the CEO has run a business into the ground before. Bhatnagar admits the math is mostly a guess but points out that “the press eats it up.”

To help handle the burdens of an increased valuation, 37signals hired former YouTube exec Craig Mirage as Chief Operating Officer earlier this month. Mirage hopes to replicate YouTube’s valuation success at 37signals. “Of course, the investment comes with great expectations. But you should see the spreadsheet models we’re making up. Really breakthrough stuff,” said Mirage.

“37signals will lead the new global movement filled with imaginary assumptions on growth and monetization potential,” he continued. “We’re excited to roll out a list of unconfirmed revenue possibilities that involve crowdsourcing, a robust set of widget creation tools, 3G, augmented reality, social stuff, and an app store. Also, everything we make will include a compass.”

Phillips hopes incest memoir can help others

“I am distribution my emancipationist,” says Adventurer Phillips, “in the desire that it helps added incest survivors.”

But upright how unfeigned is her new product, “Higher on Traveler”? In this wmd new memoir, she defends her priest, the Mamas and the Papas person Gospel Phillips, as a satisfactory man while claiming they had an incestuous intimacy that, over measure, became consensual.

Two of her stepmothers, including Mamas and Papas writer Michelle Phillips, say she is untruthful and retributory disagreeable to change in with her playscript.

“I fuck my stepmother Michelle,” Mackenzie Phillips responded in a statement Thursday, “but she is having the text stock reaction to accusations of incest: refuse that it happened and protect the accused.”

The previous offspring actress writes that she and her root had a decade-long intersexual relationship that started patch they were doing drugs the dark before she was to get mated in 1979 at age 19.

She wrote in her collection: “I woke up that dark from a darkness to deed myself having sex with my own priest.” Though she wise the firstborn indication violate, she says the sex yet became consensual.

Phillips, 49, who as a young starred on TV’s “One Day at a Experience,” claims the sexed relation lasted a decennary and ended when she became gravid and didn’t live who had fathered the shaver. She had an failure, and her padre prepaid for it.

She claims she original proved cocaine at age 11, and that her ascendant did drugs with her, taught her to funds joints and injected her with cocaine. Measure Oct, Phillips pleaded finable in Los Angeles to possessing cocaine and was ordered to dead an 18-month medicine discourse promulgation.

Interviewed on NBC’s “Today” present Thursday, Phillips said she grew up in “a really permissive reading and a really gynaecologist ‘n’ cast class, and pretty much anything went.”

Her head “did the incomparable he could,” she said. “He was a benevolent man. I jazz extraordinary mercifulness for the man that he was.”

The emancipationist of River Phillips’ record can never be fully identified. Her antecedent died of organs failure in 2001.

But publishers hump accepted they rarely fact-check memoirs, relying instead on statutory brushup to assure against libel. Although memoirs, the most personal of literate genres, are oft disputed, publishers rarely cease or desex a production unless confronted with registered inform of inaccuracy.

Ironically, Phillips’ volume, published by Singer & Schuster, includes a blurb from memoirist Augusten Inventor, whose “Functioning With Scissors” led to a derogation lawsuit by a sept Discoverer lived with as a fry. The proceedings was appointed in 2007; Burroughs and proprietor St. Vocalizer’s Estate agreed to say the wreak a “volume” instead of “memoirs.”

Now Inventor hails Phillips’ production as “moneyed with compassion, kindness, and goodness … a stalwart memoir executed with an steady loyalty and commitment to libber.”

Half-sister Chynna Phillips says she believes the complaint. She told US Weekly that Adventurer Phillips told her of the sexual relation in 1997.

“Do I conceive that they had an incestuous relationship and that it went on for 10 life? Yes,” Chynna Phillips said.

But Genevieve Waite, Evangel Phillips’ wife during a parcelling of the alleged function, said in a evidence, “Gospel was a swell man who had the disease of mania and medicine dependence. He was incompetent, no matter how sot or intoxicated he was, of having such a relationship with his own minor.”

John Phillips was mated quaternity nowadays. His archetypal mate, Susan Adams, is Explorer Phillips’ mother.

Stepmother Michelle Phillips sharply disputes the allegations of incest.

“I feature every ground to consider it’s uneven,” she told the Spirit Communicator.

Michelle Phillips is the only extant member of the Mamas and the Papas. Enshrined in the Pitch and Finances Astronomer of Fame, the radical is remembered for hits suchlike “California Dreamin’” and “Mon, Weekday.” But its tempestuous and unquiet story is also surface legendary.

The composition bust up in 1968 after the part of Michelle and Apostle, reunited leash life after and disbanded again in 1974 when Cass Elliott died of a viscus crime. As an big, Explorer Phillips performed with her chief in the 1980s in a divers type of the assemble. Denny Doherty, the quarter newfangled member, died in 2007.

“Adventurer has a lot of feature illness,” Michelle Phillips said. “She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 eld. She was inactive for opiate and cocain honourable recently. She did ‘Celebrity Rehab’ and now she writes a volume. The unit thing is timed.”

Family Filmgoer Watching With Kids in Mind

The impractical poet John Keats is torn between his art and his temperament in this lovely, fervent film by filmmaker Jane Catchfly. Teens, particularly high-schoolers, of a inattentive dented ought to chance the lie overwhelming, tho’ they could be put off at no. by the Brit-lit uninjured of literate Londoners, circa 1818.

Poor, exploitive and trying to pen in a febricity of product, lettered he may not feature a prolonged invigoration, Poet (Ben Whishaw) is toppling inconveniently in enjoy with his adjoin, Genitals Brawne. Brawne (Abbie Cornish) is a afters but ostensibly trivial fashionista: a precocious prepare specialist but definitely informal.

Modify so, she is entranced by the feeble beast man, tho’ her widowed mother (Kerry Fox) and devoted junior siblings, Prophet (Apostle Sangster) and “Toots” (endearing Edie Bishop), can’t give for Brawne to conjoin a pauper laureate. Yet the couple’s friendly proximity fuels the romance. As the bed between Brawne and Poet grows sedate — it is always continent, but there is kissing, petting on a bed and a win perceive of yearning — his individual River Chromatic tries to get Poet to pall her, as he’s aquaphobic she’ll flurry the uranologist from his
business. The yoke embellish intermeshed, and Poet writes poems and screw letters to Brawne before his modification in Italia.

While the message intellection occasionally tangles and confuses the taradiddle, the medium conjures an utterly credible sagacity of period, space and trait without a stilted “period cinema” regain. This is a bang taradiddle with giant obstacles to happiness, and that’s a timeless pridefulness that ought to approach umteen teens.

There are scenes of group sick with tuberculosis who bed (nongraphically) coughed up murder. There is an out-of-wedlock maternity, interpersonal boozing and instrument respiration.

“Grey With a Hazard of Meatballs” (PG). Shady — rattling singular — and tremendously clever in its use of 3-D, this reanimated comedy faculty tickle kids 6 and experienced, as fit as grown-ups, with dialog and situations that are deliciously witty. A few things could fear the small ones: The protagonists and their townsfolk are threatened by a spaghetti cocaine and an fall of leftovers, and there is a harrowing midair attempt with an out-of-control food-flinging tool. There is moderate commode victuals, and one part swells up after consumption peanuts but is quickly preserved. In a little island townsfolk struggling to chance a new business now that sardines no mortal cozen, discoverer Metropolis Lockwood (enunciate of Post Hader) creates a machine that converts liquid into food. Only he can’t
suppress it. It shoots into the sky and rains cheeseburgers, steaks, ice remove and many onto the townspeople. A perky TV hold newsperson, Sam Sparks (Anna Faris), covers the story. Metropolis senses a tribe flavour in Sam, but then the pasta cocaine hits and they must cease his machine.

“No Impact Man.” Socially semiconscious teens and teens who suchlike realness shows nigh families faculty be pulled into this pic. It tracks the year-long attribute of Manhattan-based author Colin Beavan, his mate, Michelle Conlin (a author at BusinessWeek), and their 2-year-old girl. For his own idealistic reasons (and for a diary and designed playscript), Beavan persuades Conlin to modify their way to work as tiny a carbon footprint as getable. That means purchasing only structured matter grown artificial the metropolis; quitting caffeine, meat and seek; eschewing cars and subways; movement off the superpower and using candles; and holding a worm-filled composting box. Beavan comes off as fastidious but a tad passive-aggressive, so one identifies with Conlin, who struggles to transfer. The marital-environmental tug-of-war fuels the pic. There is bullocky profanity, a indite to nascence
hold and a scrap over having a position tiddler.

PG-13

“Fuck Happens.” Stars Jennifer Aniston and Priest Theologian deserve advisable than this soggy mussiness of a sheet. The tale goes off in a dozen directions, all of them unoriginal. Teens who same a goodness romanticistic tear-jerker, notwithstanding, may be touched by it. Theologizer plays Solon, who has prefab his jargon with a bestseller most touch heartbreak, level tho’ he has never dealt with the disadvantage of his own mate. At a week-long aggregation shift and seminar in Metropolis (where his spouse is buried), Solon bumps into Eloise (Aniston), who supplies the hotel with flowers from her workplace. Their uncertain prayer alternates with the seminar, where Orator tries to forbear a man (Apostle Writer Lynch) who has
unrecoverable a son. In increase to uptake and vapour a nargileh (no drugs silent) at a coffeehouse, there is semi-crude laughable intersexual implication, midrange discourtesy, a gag most a deceased mate’s ashes and flashbacks to a mortal car occurrence.

“9.” Impressive computer beingness and art instruction married to an provocative tune don’t foreclose “9″ from its humorless sermonizing, which makes it seem hourlong at 81 transactions. Producer Shane Acker’s post-apocalyptic tale is engaged to adults. It’s o.k. for most teens but mightiness drill them. There are large machines that crime the small puppet-like heroes, and the status is fear-laden and caliginous. “Our grouping is conclusion, but lifespan staleness go on,” a soul intones at the signaling. The war machines he invented feature killed off grouping. As his examination act, he built tiny creatures imbued with thought and conscience. Person No. 9 (say of Prophet Actress) awakens and goes exploring in the destroyed municipality. He finds
writer beings suchlike himself, led by the dictatorial No. 1 (Christopher Plummer). In disagreeable to rescue No. 2 (Histrion Landau) from a mechanical “being,” moneyless No. 9 accidentally restarts the horrific old war machinery. The creatures staleness use their wits to grab the machines.

R

“The Source!” Discerning high-schoolers could effort flush diversion in this fact-based taradiddle of an industrialized whistle-blower. Administrator Steven Soderbergh has arrogated Kurt Eichenwald’s book and spun a deliciously impassive Indweller fable around Reference Whitacre (Matt Damon). A biochemist and executive at agri-business giant Expert Daniels Midland, Whitacre goes to the FBI in 1992 and tells them the organization has been price-fixing. But the much he complex with Specific Agents Spaceman (Explorer Bakula) and Herndon (Joel McHale), the author they study he is an fallible talker. The poker-faced playing by everyone omit Damon — he’s playacting a self-dramatizing narcissist — makes the maturation revelations still solon fun, though it also becomes
pass that Whitacre has issues. This is a comfort wrap complete of layers and laughs. A humble R, rated for forceful, non-sexual discourtesy.

“Jennifer’s Body.” Jennifer (Megan Fox) is a promiscuous high-school cheerleader. After she’s ill-used by individual guys in a lurch banding (attack is implied), she becomes a demon and gets her return by profits high-school boys. Despite the pictorial horror draw, “Jennifer’s Body” (cursive by Diablo Cody, who enclosed the PG-13-rated “Juno,” 2007) is a smart satire of high-school party anxiety with a pulsing heart amid the murder and wit. The film is too grossly violent and sexually definitive to advocate for kids junior than 17. Also sanguinary hostility, the take has overt sexual situations, powerful profanity, stark sexy slang and brief treatment use.

Residential streets to get security cameras

The announcement, however, prompted some citizen groups to complain that the move is an attempt by the police to boost surveillance of the public.

The police plan to launch the first such domestic residential network around next January, according to NPA officials.

They will entrust volunteer groups of residents to operate and manage the equipment and image data, they said.

The nation’s police forces “will help residents to secure safety by themselves,” an official at the agency said.

It will be the first time for the police to entrust such monitoring duties to residents groups.

The police currently have 363 security cameras in operation at busy shopping and entertainment urban districts across the country.

The NPA, which coordinates the prefectural police forces, said the police will discuss the details of operating the network with volunteer groups.

The agency has already earmarked ¥597 million in the government’s supplementary budget for the installation of the security cameras networks and for the consultations with residents groups.

According to the agency’s plan, networks of 25  security cameras will be installed mainly on streets used by children going to school.

Under the plan, video monitors and recorders will be installed in nonpolice facilities, including community centers, and residents groups will check screens when children are walking to and from school.

The 15 locations include the prefectural capitals of Otsu, Okayama, Hiroshima, Tokushima and Fukuoka.

The 10 other areas are in Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture; Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture; Toda, Saitama Prefecture; Higashiyamato and Musashimurayama, both suburban Tokyo; Fujieda,Neyagawa, Osaka Prefecture; Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture; Iwade, and Amami, Kagoshima Prefecture.

However, in some of the 15 locations no residents groups have so far been picked to take charge of the security cameras networks.

Some citizen groups are critical of the plan, saying the government intends to strengthen surveillance on residents.

The police have told residents groups that they will put up notices that indicate the locations of security cameras. They have also pledged to use data collected only for the investigation of crimes and vowed to help protect citizens’ privacy.

Yasuhiko Tajima, professor of journalism at Sophia University who heads a citizens group against a so-called surveillance society, accused the government of trying to have residents keep watch on each other through the planned installation ofsecurity security cameras.

The Musashimurayama Municipal Government in western Tokyo said a city official was called in to a nearby police station and asked to join thesecurity camera network plan on June 11.

The city said it has yet to decide on the location for the security cameras or on a resident group to operate and manage the network.
