The iPad’s Maps applicationlication requires Internet access to function. This does not need to be 3G, but a 3G connection will keep the map operational when you’re outside a Wi-Fi coverage area. If you have a Wi-Fi-only iPad, you can use a few techniques to keep your maps up-to-date and functioning when and where you need them, it is very useful for you.

How it Works

The Maps application on the iPad uses Google map technology to provide search results, directions and other information. Google stores massive amounts of information online, sending only what you need for the current view to your iPad at any given time. This information updates with fresh data as you move around the map or zoom in or out, and without a connection to the Internet, Maps cannot get the data it needs.

Location Information

The Maps application can find your location over Wi-Fi or 3G to give you directions from where you are to where you want to go. If you want it to work without 3G, you must have an active Wi-Fi connection. This can be a home, office or public network. Wi-Fi location information may not be as accurate as 3G location information, as 3G iPads include a GPS chip for precise location, whereas Wi-Fi-only models lack this chip.

Moving Maps

To use Maps without a 3G connection for driving directions or any other purpose while you’re moving, you need a way for the service to update information. For Wi-Fi Only iPads, you can use a mobile hotspot device to access a specific cellular network’s 3G service. The device and service will both cost extra. Many smartphones also provide apps that broadcast the phone’s 3G signal into Wi-Fi format. If you have such an app, you can activate it to keep your iPad connected to the Internet even if it has no built-in 3G. These apps generally incur a data charge beyond your phone’s data allotment, and they may significantly decrease battery life on your phone.

Alternatives

If you need only a static map as you travel, don’t rely on the Maps application once you leave your Wi-Fi connection are, as it needs to refresh, especially if you return to the home screen or multitask with another app. Instead, set up the map the way you want it and snap a screenshot with your iPad by pressing the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously. The snapshot is stored in your Photos app, so you can launch it without any Internet connection and refer to it any time. For lengthy travels, set up several snapshots to cover your route so you have a complete map to your destination.
