Google and chinese gov talk

Google’s Chinese search engine was defying local law on Tuesday by returning links involving the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and the Xinjiang independence movement, according to a report from NBC News.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the company tells NBC that despite its January 12 announcement that it has decided to “no longer” censor search results in China, it is continuing to do so. “”We have not changed our operations,” the web giant said.

Nonetheless, NBC was able to access previously-censored links from Google.cn, including the famous 1989 image of a lone man blocking a line of Chinese tanks in Tiananmen Square. A search for “tank man” in Chinese characters on the search engine returned just one link to the photo – though several are available from the company’s engine overseas.

Meanwhile, searching for “Tiananmen Square massacre”, “Xinjiang independence” and “Tibet Information Network” turned up long lists of previously censored results.

NBC did say, however, that search results were erratic and that in some cases, access to verboten sites was indeed denied. One can only assume that Google.cn was experiencing some sort of wonderfully convenient technical difficulties. Or that someone was having some fun.

In mid-January, in response to an alleged Chinese hack on its internal systems, Google said it would enter talks with the Chinese government to determine “the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all”. But talks continue to drag on – apparently – and Google CEO Eric Schmidt says the company has “no timetable” for their completion.

google to launch lower-end Nexus One in India

Google’s highly anticipated smart phone, Nexus One, is already being sold many different locations around the world. But what really comes as a big surprise is that Google is planning to launch a ‘scaled down’ version of Nexus One in India which will have fewer features compared to original Nexus One.
Although there is no word about the pricing as Google is trying to target a bigger mobile phone Market in India which is dominated by Nokia and Blackberry. However, according to some sources, the price will be much lower than the original one.

The original Nexus One features 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen, 512MB Flash along with a 4GB microSD slot, video recording at 20 frames per second and numerous Google services such as Gmail, Google Search etc.

For all that’s in the air for now, a report suggests that the new Nexus One for India will have a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen and Snapdragon processor but with a downgraded memory and Camera. Now, let’s wait and watch if Google really makes a hit on this one.

Keeping Up With Google Is Essential To SEO Success

“With the recent deal that brought Microsoft’s own search engine, Bling, to Yahoo, Google has had to add a little juice to its already popular search engine, to keep in line with its new competition,” said Peter. “This has forced many website owners to concentrate on some exciting Google features that were likely not considered when their sites were first developed.”

One of those features, according to Crisafi, is Google’s “local results.”

“Google has done a great job of geo-targeting its search results,” says Crisafi. “Any company that relies on local business needs to take advantage of this specialized Google search function.”

Another popular function of Google’s search engine, Crisafi says, is its “recent results” feature, which boosts sites with recently updated relevant content.

“This is why it is imperative,” says Crisafi, “to keep a website’s content fresh.”

Crisafi says that other useful features include Google’s “related results” which gives users suggested keyword terms related to their search, Google’s “timeline” feature which shows the frequency by which pages have been updated in relation to certain search terms, and “Google Local” which, if taken advantage of properly, will post relevant sites within Google’s map feature.

“With so many options out there for those searching for information through Google, the possibilities are endless for website owners who want to dominate their particular market,” says Crisafi. “To do so, however, website owners must rely on professional search engine optimization experts who are familiar with everything that Google has to offer.”

WP Autoblogged How to search and replace

We get a lot of questions on how to perform various search and replace operations in AutoBlogged. Because not everyone is an expert with regular expressions, we thought we would share some of the most common patterns we have found useful.
Search and Replace Overview

The Search and Replace feature allows you to modify the content of a feed based on Regular Expression searches. With this feature you can do things such as rewrite words, enforce naming standards, insert affiliate ID’s, correct non-standard feeds, create unique content, or just about anything else you can imagine. Search and Replace uses the PCRE syntax.

  • Search for – The search term or regular expression to find.
  • Replace with – The expression to use for replacing the search term.

Note that the Search and Replace feature uses Regular Expressions so you must escape any special characters in your search pattern with a slash (\) character. The special characters that need escaping are \^.$|()[].

Note that if your search expression contains multiple grouped matches, the Replace operation will only be performed on the primary match. For more precise control over replacement, you can use back references in your replace expression. Back references are special variables that return a portion of your match. Matches are grouped by numbers corresponding to portions of your pattern that are in parenthesis. The variable $1 refers to the first match, $2 refers to the second, and so on. $0 refers to the entire matched string.

Common Patterns

Description Search For Replace With
HTML Formatting – Some searches such as Google Blog Search will apply the <b> tags around any search keywords that appear in the results. This pattern removes those tags. <\/?b> (leave empty)
Feedburner Feed Flares – These are the links at the bottom of many feedburner feeds. These links can be confusing since they aren’t from your site and can mess up your blog formatting. <div>.*<\/div> (leave empty)
Create Hyperlinks – You can automatically turn any plain-text URL into a clickable hyperlink using this pattern. [^\"](https?|ftp)://([-A-Z0-9.]+)(/[-A-Z0-9+&@#/%=~_|!:,.;]*)?(\?[-A-Z0-9+&@#/%=~_|!:,.;]*)? <a href=”$0″>$0</a>
Replace Words – Sometimes you want to fix common misspellings, ensure common terminology, fix capitalization, or just mix things up a bit to ensure you don’t run into any duplicate content penalties. wordpress|word\spress|wrodpress WordPress
Clickable Keywords – Sometimes you want certain words in your blog to automatically become hyperlinks to another site you want to promote. auto\s?blog[^\s]* <a href=”http://autoblogged.com”>$0</a>
Fix Bad Feeds – Sometimes a feed has the wrong encoding or they don’t just follow standards and you see html markup appear encoded in your page content. These next two patterns turns &gt; and &lt; back into their literal characters. &gt; >
&lt; <
Remove Hyperlinks – If you are using the %content% variable in your post template but want to remove any live hyperlinks, use this pattern. <a\s[^>]*>([^<*]*)< $1
